Homemade pop tart ingredients
Making homemade pop tarts is surprisingly simple, especially when you use a couple of shortcuts!
With just two ingredients, you can whip up a batch of flaky, fruity pastries in no time.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Store-bought pie dough – This is the secret to an easy homemade pop tart! It bakes up golden and crisp, giving you that classic flaky texture without the hassle of making pastry from scratch.
- Strawberry jam – The sweet filling that brings everything together. Choose a high-quality jam for the best flavor.

How to make strawberry pop tarts at home
With store bought pie dough, a yummy strawberry jam, and a quick glaze, you can easily create a homemade version of the classic treat.
Here’s how to do it step by step:
1. Cut into a square. Unroll the pie crusts. Cut each one into a square. Divide one square into 4 sections by gently pressing lines into the dough.
2. Add strawberry jam. Place the dough onto a parchment lined baking sheet.Spoon jam into each section of the pie dough square. Spread the jam into an even layer, leaving an inch border around the edges.
3. Seal well. Place the second square of dough on top of the first. Using a fork, seal the outside edges well. Using a sharp knife, cut the sections apart. Seal the remaining edges.
4. Bake the pop tarts. Bake at 350° F until golden brown. Let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
5. Add the glaze (optional). Drizzle a glaze over the cooled pop tarts, top with sprinkles, and enjoy!

Baking tips
Here are some tips to ensure your pop tarts turn out perfectly every time:
- Don’t overfill – A generous amount of strawberry filling is tempting, but too much can cause leaks while baking. Stick to about 1 tablespoon per pop tart for the best results.
- Seal the edges well – Press the edges together firmly with a fork to prevent the filling from spilling out. For an extra-secure seal, lightly brush the edges with milk before pressing.
- Vent the tops – Before baking, poke a few small holes in the top of each pop tart with a fork, being careful not to poke holes in the bottom layer of dough. This helps steam escape and prevents them from puffing up too much.
- Let them cool before glazing – It’s tempting to drizzle on the glaze right away, but if the pop tarts are too warm, it will melt and slide off. Let them cool completely for a perfect layer of glaze.
Follow these tips, and you’ll have homemade strawberry pop tarts that are beautifully crisp, packed with flavor, and absolutely irresistible!

- Ruler
- Sharp knife
- parchment paper
- baking tray
Ingredients
- 2 store bought pie crusts
- ¼ cup strawberry jam
- milk (for brushing on the pastry)
Simple glaze (optional)
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- ½ TBS milk
Instructions
- Take the 2 store bought pie crusts out of the fridge or freezer. Keep them wrapped in their plastic, and let them sit out on the counter to warm up a little bit. This makes them roll out easier. If they were in the fridge, it should only take 10 minutes or so. If from the freezer, it'll take about 30 minutes.2 store bought pie crusts
- Place an oven rack in the center position of your oven. Heat the oven to 350° F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Roll out the pie crusts into 12" diameter discs. Using a ruler to measure, cut one of the pie crusts into an 8×8-inch square.
- Set the cut pie dough square on top of the other pie crust. Using it as a guide, cut the second pie crust to the same sized square.
- Place one of the squares onto the lined baking tray. Set the other pie dough square aside for later.
- Using a butter knife or bench scraper, make lines on the square, sectioning it into 4 equal quadrants, without cutting them apart.
- Spoon a tablespoon of strawberry jam onto each section of the dough. Spread the jam into an even layer, leaving about an inch border around the edges. Using a clean finger or pastry brush, carefully brush milk around the edges.¼ cup strawberry jam, milk
- Place the second square of dough on top of the first. Using a fork, seal the outside edges well.
- Cut the sections apart with a sharp knife. Space the pop tarts about 2" apart from each other on the baking tray.
- Seal the remaining edges well with a fork. Then, gently poke holes in the top of each pastry, being careful not to poke through the bottom layer of pie dough. Brush the top of each pop tart with milk to help with browning.
- Bake in the heated oven for 25 – 30 minutes (or until golden brown). Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 3 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Make simple glaze
- Put the powdered sugar in a small bowl. Add the milk ½ a teaspoon at a time, whisking between additions, until you achieve a consistency where, when you let the glaze ribbon from the whisk, it takes about 10 – 15 seconds for the ribbons to incorporate smoothly into the surface of the glaze.
- Spread about a tablespoon of glaze on to each cooled pop tart. Top with some sprinkles (optional), and enjoy!
