Ingredients
Creamy and naturally sweetened, you’ll want to make this recipe far more often than you probably should.
Here’s the low down on what you’ll need to make this:
- Cream Cheese – Smooth, creamy, and irresistibly tangy. Make sure it’s at room temp when making the chocolate frosting.
- Butter – Use unsalted butter so you have control over the amount of salt added to keep things balanced.
- Dates – The variety you’ll want to use is medjool. These type of dates have a high sugar content and when made into a paste, seamlessly incorporate into recipes.
- Cocoa Powder – Makes this go from a basic frosting recipe to an incredible chocolate experience.
- Unsweetened Chocolate – Two elements of chocolate takes the chocolate flavor over the top.
- Vanilla Extract – Since this won’t be heated, it’s worth using a high quality extract.
- Hot Water – Used to soak the dates so that they’ll blend into an ultra smooth paste.
- Salt – Even just a small amount of salt makes things more balanced and enhances the flavor of everything else.

Tips for the Best Date Sweetened Cream Cheese Frosting
This is a super easy recipe to make, but there are certain things you can do to ensure 100% success.
Below are tips for making chocolate cream cheese frosting that’s sweetened with dates:
- Soften key ingredients. Cold butter and cold cream cheese won’t mix into a creamy frosting. They need to be softened first. Take them out of the fridge about 30 minutes before go time so they’ll be ready to beat into the creamy frosting of your dreams.
- Use full fat cream cheese. If you want the tastiest experience possible, don’t skimp on the fat in the cream cheese.
- Cool date paste before adding to butter and cream cheese. If the date paste is hot in any way, it can melt the butter when you add the two together. To be successful, let the date paste cool down before you mix it in with the butter and cream cheese.
- Chop the chocolate small. You want the chocolate to easily melt, so chop it into small pieces.
- Blend dates until very smooth. In order to evenly sweeten the frosting, you need to blend the dates into an ultra smooth paste. When blending the dates up, stop and scrape down the sides a couple times to make sure there are no chunks.
