Some tips on cleaning with vinegar
Why is vinegar good for cleaning?
First off, the type of vinegar I’m talking about when I talk about cleaning with vinegar is white distilled vinegar. Not apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar, red wine vinegar, etc. This recipe is made with just your run of the mill, super inexpensive, white distilled vinegar.
You should use white distilled vinegar for cleaning because it is 4-6% acetic acid. Acetic acid gives it it’s familiar smell, but more importantly, acetic acid helps breaks down oils, dirt, stains, and bacteria.
Can I use a vinegar based cleaner on quartz?
Diluted vinegar is safe to use on quartz. Do not wipe your quartz surfaces with straight, undiluted vinegar, but diluted vinegar won’t ruin quartz.
Vinegar based cleaners are not a good idea to use on marble or granite countertops. The acid in the vinegar can be too abrasive for these natural stone surfaces and can etch marble and granite.
How do I make vinegar smell good?
Vinegar has a distinct, sharp smell. Even when diluted with water, the powerful smell of vinegar can still be noticeable.
To cover that vinegar smell, all you have to do is take some time to infuse the vinegar with something that smells good. For this tutorial, I infuse the vinegar with lemon. I like using lemon peels because I use lemons all the time for cooking, so I almost always have peels on hand.
I keep a jar in the back corner of my fridge to put lemon peels in after I use a lemon while cooking. Once the jar is full, I take it out and start the process of infusing it with lemon.
What vinegar to water ratio should I use?
You should use a 1:1 water to vinegar ratio when making a vinegar based cleaner.
If you put in way more vinegar than water, your countertop spray will be too abrasive for your quartz countertop.
If you put in hardly any vinegar compared to water, the cleaner won’t be effective.
Conclusion
This homemade lemon quartz countertop cleaner is an inexpensive, safe cleaner that is made with ingredients you most likely already have on hand.
If you’re looking to keep your quartz kitchen countertops clean and fresh while also saving money, than this homemade lemon quartz countertop cleaner is a great option.
